At St Anne’s Catholic Primary School PE is delivered to both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 as discreet lessons and throughout the wider curriculum.

We follow the PE Hub scheme of work. PE is taught by both class teachers and specialist sports coaches.

PE is led by Miss Howarth/Mr Anderson.

PE Curriculum

A wide range of activities are delivered in school which aim to engage and INSPIRE all of our children. We are also committed to ensure that all children in KS2 receive at least 2 hours per week of high quality, well-planned Physical Education.

Over the year each child will participate in games, athletics, dance and gymnastics lessons.  Opportunities are also planned for swimming in Key Stage 2. Our aim is that all children leave our school at the end of Year 6 being able to swim 25 metres, therefore  non-swimmers are given additional swimming lessons.

All Year 6 children have the opportunity to participate in a week’s residential holiday which includes outdoor adventurous activities. In 2021 we provided a two night residential for our Y5 pupils.

The Wider Curriculum

PE and Sport has a high profile in our school and permeates many aspects of our school life.

Throughout the year we hold theme weeks such as ‘Health and Wellbeing’ week, where children participate in a wide range of activities and have a ‘taster’ session of a sport or activity that otherwise they may never have tried.

Classes have the opportunity to take part in structured play activities at lunchtime including football, bat and ball skills, skipping, trim trail and our outdoor activity play area.

During our residential visits, children are given the opportunity to participate in many different activities which may include assault courses and abseiling, fencing, archery and kayaking.

In the summer term we also hold our annual Sports Days in which we encourage participation of all children and organise competitive races.

Talented children are signposted to local clubs and events to encourage them to develop their skills e.g. Huyton Boys Football Club, Liverpool Gymnastics Club, John Mitchels Gaelic Football Club.

Beyond the School Day

The school is keen to provide a wide range of extra – curricular clubs for children throughout the year which are organised by our teaching staff and/or sports coaches.

Children enjoy the opportunity to work with different teachers and have the chance to try many sports such as Netball, Dance, Cross Country, Football, Multi-skills, Cricket, Rounders, Athletics, Handball,  Volleyball, Archery, Dodgeball.

We try to cater for all our children’s needs and ask the children which clubs they would like to see included during the year; we also monitor participation and check uptake against gender and Pupil Premium children.

We enter competitions and encourage children to participate in team sports.  Please refer to the ‘Extra Curricular’ page on our website for more details of the extra curricular activities on offer.

Primary school experiences are pivotal to the children’s future perception of physical activity and we believe that children leave our school equipped to enjoy sport for all its health and social benefits.  For those who relish the competitive element, they gain the skills, confidence and relevant experience to succeed at their chosen level and discipline.

During the academic year of 2019-2020 we encouraged our school community to attend parkruns at the weekend and we met on a Sunday as a school at the Mystery parkrun in Wavertree, Liverpool. Again this was to promote adapting a healthy lifestyle and providing another avenue for our children to get involved with. During a Rugby World Cup theme week, we invited coaches from a Merseyside Rugby Club to work with our children this provided another avenue for our children to get involved in.

As well as providing extra curricular clubs for every year group in 2020-2021, we provided sports camps for our children at half terms and during the summer break. We felt this was vital to keep our children fit and healthy, but also to provide another social outlet for our children.

St Anne’s Catholic Primary School is supported by the local School Sports Partnership which has facilitated training for staff and assisted us in putting together bids for play equipment and evidencing our provision for sport.

We have also been successful in achieving the school sports Kite Mark (silver) status, the Virtual School Games award, and the school games engaged school.
