This school provides its pupils with a rich, broad and balanced curriculum which meets fully the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for England and the requirement to teach Religious Education.
- The national curriculum sets out the most important knowledge skills and understanding that every child has a right to learn.
- It is a framework given to teachers by the government, so that all school children are taught in a way that is balanced and manageable, but hard enough to challenge them.
- It provides standards that measure how well children are doing in each subject so that teachers can plan to help them do better.
In Key Stages 1 and 2 each year group has curriculum guidelines which set out in detail the content for each subject based on the National Curriculum Subject Handbooks. The subjects include english, mathematics, art, music, design technology, physical education, computing, history and geography, science, and religious education.
The subject content for each year group, for religious education is based upon the agreed Catholic Syllabus for Religious Education called \’Come and See\’.
In English children are taught speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. We use a wide range of methods and materials for teaching reading including phonics and other excellent strategies. The phonics reading scheme which is used across the school is called \’Read, Write, Inc\’.
Through the curriculum, pupils learn the basic skills necessary to succeed in each subject and we use the curriculum to help them develop their personal and social skills.
In addition to the National Curriculum the school provides a wide range of visits and extra-curricular opportunities plus additional activities which include dance and drama.
Where children have special needs or disability we make provision for them so that they too can flourish.
We encourage children to be keen, enthusiastic, independent learners and we give them lots of opportunities to develop their inter-personal skills by working and co operating with others. Through the curriculum we build their self-esteem and self confidence.
We have implemented an \’Assertive Mentoring\’ scheme , which brings many of our school systems together in one place. It is a focused, child centred, collaborative approach based on a dialogue about the child\’s present and future learning needs. Teachers have mentor meetings with their pupils based on mathematics, attendance, punctuality, behaviour both in and out of class, effort, homework and uniform. The meetings help the children to understand what is expected of them and what they are trying to learn; they are given feedback, shown how to improve and are fully involved in the process. Each child has their own file and the areas of asessment are recorded as \’green\’ if the child is on target, \’yellow\’ if mostly achieved or \’red\’ if not achieved. The children are given \’smilies\’ as rewards and their achievements are celebrated.
Each year in school builds on the previous year. We assess progress and achievement and we regularly report to parents about how well their children are doing.

At St Anne’s we follow a scheme of work for Computing from the Knowsley City Learning Centre.
The Computing curriculum is taught both as a discreet subject and as a cross-curricular link within other subjects. We recognise that Computing is a part of everyday lives for children and adults alike, and our curriculum reflects that.
Progress and attainment are assessed using the CLC’s Computing Portfolios and children help to identify their own \’next steps\’ using the stepping stones.

Our Curriculum intent in Science is to INSPIRE children to ask questions and develop understanding of the world around them, to think scientifically and engage in an experience of discovery. We recognise the importance of Science in everyday life.

In St Anne’s we follow a scheme of work for History and Geography called ‘Voyagers’. The Humanities are taught discreetly on a weekly basis in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, with a History or Geography focus each term. Progress and attainment are assessed using the Key Curriculum objectives for each subject and the Voyagers Progression map.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE
The Modern Foreign Language taught at St Anne’s is French.
We follow a programme of work from the Janet Lloyd Network and progress and attainment are assessed using the Primary Languages Learning Ladder.
French is taught to all children in Key Stage 2 classes as a discreet half hour lesson each week and also through incidental inputs throughout the week.

In St Anne’s PE is delivered to both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 as discreet lessons and throughout the wider curriculum.
In Key Stage 1 we follow the Youth Sports Trust Active Play scheme of work and in Key Stage 2 we follow the PE Planning Ltd scheme of work and Knowsley School Sports Partnership Planning for Dance and Gymnastics. PE is taught by both class teachers and specialist PE teachers.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
In St Anne’s Design and Technology is delivered through the National Curriculum objectives. Children link Design and Technology skills to wider curriculum themes. Food Technology skills and Healthy Schools objectives are covered in each year group as part of a discreet topic.
The Design Technology lead is Miss Harrison.
In St Anne’s we believe that a high-quality Art education will help stimulate creativity, imagination and inventiveness. Teaching equips pupils with the skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
In order to do this we use an ‘Arts Passport’ which will follow each child through the school, starting at Foundation stage. In the Art Passport children will also have the opportunity to self assess their own progression in art; it also guarantees that children experience a range of art techniques.
The lead for Art and the Performing Arts is Miss Walsh.
At St Anne’s the Music curriculum is taught through a scheme called ‘Charanga’. ‘Charanga’ gives all children the opportunity to develop their listening and appraisal, performance, improvisation and composing skills. Children experience a wide range of styles of music and explore the different elements of music. St Anne’s provides opportunities for children to listen to live music as well as play a range of musical instruments.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Long Term Plans
As some pupils are taught in mixed classes, the Curriculum is arranged so that they get their full curriculum entitlement over a two year period. Pupils will follow \’Route A\’ Curriculum in the first year of the cycle and \’Route B\’ in the second year.
Year 1 and 2 pupils are currently following the KS1 Route A; Year 3 and 4 are currently following LKS2 Route A and Year 5 and 6 pupils are currently following UKS2 Route A.
