Writing

My heart is stirred by a noble theme, as I recite my verses for the king, my tongue is the pen of a skilful writer.”
Psalm 45:1

Learning to write is one of the most important things that a child at primary school will learn. Children use their writing skills in all other subjects of the curriculum. At St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School, the highest priority is given to ENCOURAGING and developing children’s skills as writers from the moment they enter school so that these can be applied INDEPENDENTLY.

For a child, learning to write, is a cognitively complex process because it involves: handwriting, grammar, spelling, punctuation as well as considering the audience we are writing for.

Throughout their eight years at St Anne’s Catholic Primary School, we encourage and develop children’s RESILIENCE and SKILLS as writers so that they can confidently convey their ideas and feelings across the curriculum.

English, at St Anne’s Catholic Primary School, is taught through the use of high quality texts where the link between Reading and Writing is made clear, using Literacy Count’s Read 2 Write units. These are planned out ensuring progression across the year groups and engaging in exciting provocations for Writing. We plan in a wide range of speaking and listening and Writing activities as well as making links between grammar and spelling.

Handwriting

To ensure that a consistent approach to handwriting, the school follows the Letterjoin scheme and children are explicitly taught this skill. Handwriting is a cross-curricular task and will be taken into consideration during all lessons. Formal teaching of handwriting will be carried out regularly and systematically to ensure Key Stage targets are met.

Spelling

In order to ensure the coverage of statutory requirements for the National Curriculum we use Liverpool Spelling Programme. In conjunction with this children have access to Spelling Shed to support and practice key words.
